Position Overview

As the Senior Counsel – Renewable Energy and Utilities, you will be pivotal in facilitating the delivery of Rowan's energy infrastructure solutions. Your role will involve collaboration with leading utility partners to ensure timely and budget-conscious execution of essential projects, aligning with Rowan's capacity and reliability standards, while also supporting our sustainability goals.

The ideal candidate will possess a background in large-scale, energy-intensive initiatives and a strong enthusiasm for renewable energy and sustainability. In this capacity, you will work closely with the Rowan business team and engage directly with power utilities throughout the engineering, procurement, and construction phases of projects. Additionally, you will collaborate with internal teams focused on energy strategy, project management, site development, engineering, construction, and operations to ensure successful project energization. You will also provide guidance to partner teams as we explore innovative sustainability solutions. To excel in this role, candidates should be more than just legal advisors; they should be valued thought partners to the business.

Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel up to 20% for meetings with utilities, developers, and customers, as well as for company events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, structure, and negotiate agreements related to electricity infrastructure and supply, including renewable power purchase agreements, battery energy storage contracts, and other innovative arrangements for a rapidly expanding portfolio of hyperscale data center projects.
  • Negotiate agreements pertaining to water infrastructure and sustainability initiatives.
  • Advise on energy, water, and sustainability strategies, policies, and regulatory matters.
  • Assist in the drafting and negotiation of customer lease and development agreements, particularly regarding utility infrastructure and supply arrangements.
  • Identify and mitigate business and legal risks.
  • Exercise independent judgment on legal matters to provide counsel to business partners and management.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an attorney or contracts manager.
  • Proficient drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Experience managing external legal counsel.
  • Legal expertise in data centers or energy-intensive sectors.
  • Familiarity with hyperscale data center clients, including co-location and cloud service providers (preferred).
  • Knowledge of real estate, project finance, and economic incentives is advantageous.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, along with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong organizational capabilities, comfort with ambiguity, and robust analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
