Position Overview

Terracon Consultants is on the lookout for a Historic Preservation Specialist to enhance our expanding Historic Preservation Team. This role is based in our Columbia, South Carolina office and is a full-time opportunity within our Environmental Planning Division. The selected candidate will engage in technical tasks related to both compliance and practical preservation initiatives.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with a diverse group of professionals, including archaeologists, architectural historians, environmental scientists, engineers, and planners. Strong writing skills and the ability to present ideas clearly and comprehensively are essential. Candidates should possess excellent technical writing abilities and appreciate a range of working environments, from research and fieldwork to office analysis.

This position presents a fantastic opportunity for an early-career Historic Preservation Specialist with outstanding communication and practical skills to thrive in a collaborative setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to safety protocols, guidelines, and standards throughout project work. Engage in pre-task planning and report any safety concerns to management.
  • Ensure quality standards are maintained and deadlines are met on projects, following Terracon's quality processes and document control reviews.
  • Assist in the preparation of survey reports, resource/site forms, research designs, and other technical documentation.
  • Support background and field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and the production of final reports.
  • Understand compliance and reporting protocols relevant to the field.
  • Foster professional relationships with existing and potential clients.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Preservation Planning, History, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and the NHPA Section 106 consultation process.
  • Willingness to travel for work projects for up to two weeks at a time.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory violation history.
  • Ability to provide examples of research and writing work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Preservation Planning, History, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Proven experience in documenting and evaluating historic structures in the southeastern United States.
  • Demonstrated capability in writing property descriptions, historical narratives, significance statements, and justifications for the National Register.
Working Conditions:
  • Fieldwork will comprise 50-75% of the role, requiring the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods.
  • Physical ability to lift or assist in moving items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Fieldwork may occur in various weather conditions throughout the year.
  • The position may require long hours and overnight travel for up to two weeks at a time.
