Responsibilities of a Correctional Officer:

As a Correctional Officer at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, you will have a significant role in facilitating positive change among adults in custody while advancing your career. Your contributions will demonstrate how effective management within correctional facilities can lead to a safer society.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Enforcing the rules and regulations that govern facility security
  • Providing supervision, care, and correctional treatment for adults in custody
  • Maintaining institutional security, which is vital for the health and welfare of those in custody and for fostering good public relations
  • Ensuring accountability and proper conduct among adults in custody to uphold judicial sanctions
  • Objectively assessing situations and making informed decisions; may occasionally be authorized to carry firearms and use physical force to ensure safety and security
  • Being prepared to work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, or unexpected overtime during institutional emergencies
  • Demonstrating flexibility and a broad knowledge base to independently resolve various problem situations
  • Following established operations and procedures as outlined in post orders, program statements, local supplements, custodial manuals, internal communications, and employee meetings
