General Overview
Correctional Officers play a crucial role in overseeing, monitoring, and directly supervising inmate populations to ensure adherence to security protocols, operational guidelines, and procedural standards within the Dakota County Jail. This position operates within a secure facility environment that requires staff to work 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays. Officers may also be required to work on-call, overtime, and extended shifts.
Lateral candidates from other law enforcement agencies are highly encouraged to apply. Starting salaries for lateral transfers will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, training, and years of service as a correctional officer.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Graduation/GED AND Two years of full-time work experience from any industry or employer.
- OR
- A combination of post-secondary education and full-time work experience totaling two years.

- A completed 2 or 4-year degree in any field.
Position Requirements:
Candidates must successfully complete all recruitment and pre-employment requirements to be considered for the Correctional Officer position. This includes:
- Meeting educational and experience qualifications.
- Participating in a series of interviews.
- Passing a thorough background investigation.
- Completing a medical examination.
Core Responsibilities:
Correctional Officers are expected to:
- Represent the Sheriff's Office professionally.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and inmates.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Maintain officer safety and situational awareness.
- Supervise and monitor inmate activities within the facility.
- Respond to emergencies and apply appropriate measures to restore order.
- Conduct searches for contraband and process inmate releases.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Candidates should possess:
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain composure.
- Physical fitness to perform the duties required of the position.
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
Work Environment:
The role is performed in a secure jail setting, requiring physical stamina and the ability to manage various challenging situations. Officers may encounter disagreeable odors, hazardous materials, and individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs.
