Position Title:

Asphalt Maintenance Equipment Operator

Job Overview:

Under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor or Senior Equipment Operator, the incumbent is responsible for operating a variety of light to medium-sized machinery utilized in the upkeep, construction, and restoration of municipal roadways.

About the Role:

The Asphalt Maintenance Program is dedicated to the upkeep and repair of asphalt surfaces on city streets. Responsibilities include pothole repairs, crack sealing, inlays, and level patching, as well as coordinating with concrete repair efforts. Asphalt Equipment Operators address pothole issues throughout the year and engage in routine maintenance activities, including crack sealing and inlays in preparation for the Streets Surface Treatment Program.

Compensation:

Level II: $29.05/hr
Level I: $25.78/hr

Key Responsibilities:

  • As part of a crew, performs maintenance, repair, and construction tasks including road surface preparation, pothole repair, asphalt tie-ins, and various sealing techniques.
  • Operates a full range of light to medium complexity construction equipment necessary for asphalt applications.
  • Responsible for transporting signage and barricade equipment to job sites, ensuring compliance with traffic control regulations.
  • Communicates with local residents and businesses regarding construction schedules and traffic rerouting.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads equipment, tools, asphalt, and related materials.
  • May provide training to seasonal and hourly staff.
  • Conducts routine maintenance checks on assigned vehicles and performs minor repairs as needed.
  • Participates in snow removal operations as required.
  • Completes necessary documentation such as equipment logbooks and repair tickets.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Level II:

  • Two years of relevant experience in equipment operation within general labor or construction, or completion of the division's training program plus six months of experience.
  • Knowledge of standard procedures and materials used in asphalt maintenance.
  • Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Tanker endorsement or a Class B CDL with the ability to obtain a Class A within three months.
  • Possession of Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within one month of hire.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public.

Level I:

  • Zero to one year of experience in general labor or construction.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance equipment operation.
  • Possession of a valid state driver's license or Utah driving privilege card, with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months.
  • Possession of Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within one month.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity, including lifting medium to heavy weights.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and vehicular traffic.
  • Potential hazards associated with asphalt materials and construction operations.
  • Unconventional working hours and on-call responsibilities as required.
