Job Title: Corrections Specialist 2

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill the Corrections Specialist 2 position at the Washington State Penitentiary. This role is responsible for conducting administrative segregation and maximum custody hearings, providing on-site consultation and technical assistance on PREA policies, and serving as a PREA Compliance Specialist.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct administrative segregation and maximum custody hearings, acting as chairperson of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), to determine whether an incarcerated individual should be continued on administrative segregation, placed on maximum status, or recommended for a transfer to another institution or general population.
  • Develop working knowledge of all DOC Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) policies and procedures.
  • Provide on-site consultation and technical assistance to facility management and identified staff regarding implementation of PREA policies; respond to inquiries; and assist in issue resolution and local procedure development.
  • Work directly with the WSP Corrections Specialist 3/PREA Compliance Manager.
  • Serve as a Washington State Penitentiary PREA Compliance Specialist and provide expert consultation and technical assistance regarding PREA compliance for the facility.
  • Review incarcerated individuals' records and files, incident reports, correctional/classification reports, witness statements, incident video, and other evidence. The position may conduct further investigation and interviews as needed.
  • Review/Audit AdSeg and MAX hearings reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with all policies and WACs.
  • Meet regularly with supervisory personnel in the development of the institution's goals and objectives for AdSeg and MAX programs.
  • Maintain documentation of all transgenders, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals at WSP.
  • Assign investigations to staff regarding AdSeg placement of incarcerated individuals.
  • Ensure that all relevant and required forms/reports are completed for all incarcerated individuals referred to AdSeg and MAX within established timeframes, and in accordance with applicable policy and WAC's.
  • Conduct and review audits of operational areas under supervision; take corrective action as required.
  • Provide information verbally and in writing to all institution staff as required.
  • Draft responses for the Superintendent, Associate Superintendent, and other department administrators as required.
  • Respond to staff and offender correspondence.
  • Participate in PREA Advisory Council (PAC) meetings and serve as a member of the PREA Response Team.
Requirements:
  • HS Diploma/GED Equivalent + 7 years' professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections* or closely related field
  • OR
  • AA degree** + 5 years' professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections* or closely related field
  • OR
  • BA degree + 3 years' professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections* or closely related field
  • In addition to at least one of the above, this position requires:
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly, factually and concisely.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, weigh the risks, and make decisions or recommendations to staff/supervisors to address incarcerated individual needs.
  • Possess conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to train, mentor and coach staff.
  • Ability to identify and address offender behavior/needs.
  • Demonstrated positive and professional work skills.*Note: Corrections experience is defined as the focus of the work is supervising or counseling incarcerated individuals a majority of the time.
