About the Electronics and Sensors Division (ESD): ESD stands as a premier engineering and scientific authority in electronics and remote sensing systems. Our team comprises experts across various fields, including radio frequency, infrared, visible and spectral sensors, sensor exploitation techniques, analog and digital electronics, vehicle power systems, and space system electronic components, materials, and processes. Our combined expertise, along with advanced in-house laboratories, prototyping, modeling, and simulation capabilities, empowers ESD to deliver cutting-edge solutions to national space systems and civil customers.
Role Overview: The Sensor Modeling and Simulation Department (SMSD) operates within ESD, featuring a team of scientists and engineers dedicated to advancing the next generation of remote sensing systems critical to national interests. SMSD engages in all phases of advanced remote sensing system development, including:
- Designing and evaluating the performance of optics and electro-optical focal plane arrays.
- Modeling the complete sensing system.
- Creating innovative data processing and computer vision algorithms.
- Generating simulated data products for emerging applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and enhance physical models of space domain awareness (SDA) systems across optical and infrared wavelengths.
- Create physics-based modeling software to evaluate system performance against diverse requirements.
- Establish techniques for defining system performance criteria and provide guidance to government clients on best practices and trade-offs.
- Design methodologies and experiments to validate SDA system performance.
- Assess the performance implications of various sensor configurations and implementation strategies in both hardware and operational contexts.
- Collaborate with or lead small teams of engineers and scientists in developing comprehensive system and performance modeling tools across multiple software platforms.
- Present findings to government and other stakeholders to support the definition and verification of system requirements and performance.
Qualifications for Success:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline such as Remote Sensing, Imaging Science, Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Optical or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Eight years of post-bachelor's experience in remote sensing system modeling, simulation, design, data processing, calibration, characterization, phenomenology, and/or applications.
- Strong leadership aptitude and the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
- Proficient scientific programming skills (especially in C++ and Python) and familiarity with software version control systems (git, subversion).
- Demonstrated analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in developing and delivering technical presentations.
- Experience in modeling or evaluating remote sensing systems.
- Willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a STEM field such as Remote Sensing, Imaging Science, Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Optical or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Twelve years of experience post-bachelor's in remote sensing system modeling, simulation, design, data processing, calibration, characterization, phenomenology, and/or applications.
- Experience in modeling and simulation of sensor performance in SDA (optical and infrared) systems.
- Experience with image reduction processes (e.g., bias removal, gain correction).
- Familiarity with agile software development and Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence).
- Experience with FORTRAN.
- Experience in evaluating sensor hardware performance.
- Proven leadership experience and ability to mentor junior staff.
- Current and active Top Secret/SCI security clearance.
