Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist II to join our team at ProMedica Health System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizing deviations, and providing interpretation following established standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform testing, including maintaining established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, complying with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, processing biological specimens for analysis, evaluating and solving problems related to specimen collection and processing, performing routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizing deviations, and providing interpretation.
  • Maintain equipment, including performing scheduled maintenance procedures, recognizing equipment malfunctions, and acting according to established protocols.
  • Ensure quality control, including performing, recording, and maintaining accurate quality control records, recognizing out-of-control results, and taking appropriate actions.
  • Provide knowledge and resource support, including answering inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results, acting as a liaison and fostering effective communication between laboratory and healthcare team, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Operate computer systems, including performing routine inquiry and data input, ensuring accuracy of information, and being responsible for corrective actions.
  • Participate in training and competency assessment, including instructing new associates and students, assessing competencies of other test performers, and maintaining and upgrading personal professional development.
  • Meet continuing education requirements, including completing required CE units, mandatory in-services, and maintaining and upgrading personal professional development.
  • Provide guidance to coworkers in the absence of an on-site supervisor regarding staffing and technical issues that arise.
Requirements
  • Education: Doctoral, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
  • Years of Experience: Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS or meet an alternate experience route for High Complexity Testing Personnel as detailed in §.
  • Certification: American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
Working Conditions

Personal Protective Equipment: Lab Coat, Gloves, Protective Eyewear, as required.

Physical Demands: Must be able to move continuously about the hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease-bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards, and flammable liquids. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to move, lift, or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs., 5% of the time. May have to stand continuously for the entire shift. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
