POSITION OVERVIEW

The Audiovisual Production Specialist will work closely with both internal teams and external partners at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to meet all technical audiovisual needs for live or virtual events and programming. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of event production, capable of handling everything from intimate classroom discussions to elaborate performances featuring complex audio and visual elements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Audio Visual Event Support: Set up, operate, and manage audio, lighting, and visual projection systems, as well as video capture equipment, to facilitate live or virtual events in collaboration with the AV Systems Manager.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Engage with event stakeholders, providing technical guidance and support while maintaining professional interactions with departments, clients, and event representatives. Responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining display systems.
  • Equipment Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues with existing audiovisual equipment and systems in event venues. Ensure the upkeep, organization, and cleanliness of equipment, technician booths, control areas, and storage facilities. Report any issues to the AV Systems Integrator Engineer and manage equipment inventory effectively.
  • Lecture Capture: Utilize the lecture capture system to provide clients or event organizers with recorded documentation of events.
  • Technology Expertise: Stay informed about current and emerging audiovisual technologies, researching advancements that align with the department's objectives.
  • Training and Orientation: Assist in the onboarding and technical training of freelance staff by conducting tours of the facility and demonstrating the operation and configuration of audiovisual systems and equipment.
  • Additional Duties: This position primarily focuses on events and performances, but may occasionally involve projects requiring overlapping skills, such as AV equipment installations in classrooms and galleries.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role will necessitate evening and weekend hours, as determined by the scheduling manager.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, up to 90% of event duration, and sit for 75% of time during administrative tasks.
  • Frequent movement of audiovisual equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across various locations.
  • Climbing ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to adjust lighting and audiovisual setups.
  • Positioning oneself to maintain audiovisual equipment in various settings.
  • Regular operation of computers and audiovisual technology.
  • Specific vision capabilities required include close vision and the ability to maintain prolonged visual focus.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with audiovisual technology in live events and performances, preferably in higher education, fine arts, theater, or museums.
  • Familiarity with event capture systems and basic post-production skills, including video editing and audio mixing.
  • Experience in live sound, lighting, and video production.
  • Proficient computer skills, particularly with audiovisual conferencing software.
  • Ability to work sensitively with artists and creative professionals.
