CLASS TITLE: Bilingual Special Needs Classroom Support Specialist
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROLE:
Under the general guidance of the school principal and the direct supervision of a certified Special Education instructor, this position utilizes bilingual capabilities to assist in the educational development of students with disabilities; performing related responsibilities as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Employs bilingual skills to support Special Education teachers in both elementary and secondary settings, reinforcing educational efforts for children with diverse disabilities, including physical, visual, and auditory impairments, learning challenges, behavioral issues, emotional disturbances, and cognitive impairments, in alignment with each student's Individual Education Program (IEP); assists in lifting and positioning non-ambulatory students as directed by the teacher and in accordance with medical instructions; provides individualized tutoring to reinforce learning concepts; offers personal hygiene assistance for students with significant disabilities, including toileting and changing; aids students with orthopedic challenges by arranging and adjusting necessary tools and equipment in classrooms; supports teachers in instructing students in essential life skills for independence and self-sufficiency; accompanies students to various locations for personal assistance; assists in feeding students who require help; takes notes for students who are unable to do so; grades assignments and assessments; helps maintain records of student behavior; participates in class field trips; engages in professional development workshops to enhance job-related skills.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
May implement behavioral management techniques for students exhibiting challenging behaviors, may perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as instructed, may operate audiovisual and photocopying equipment.
DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Completion of an Associate's degree from an accredited institution or at least sixty (60) semester hours of college coursework, including a course focused on the characteristics of intellectual disabilities and severe/profound disabilities, or successful completion of a state-approved paraprofessional assessment, complemented by a minimum of one year of experience in the care and supervision of children with disabilities.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Strong understanding of the characteristics of students with various disabilities, proficiency in grammar and spelling in English and at least one additional language, and a solid foundation in basic mathematics.
Ability to effectively work with students with disabilities from birth to twenty-one (21) years of age; capability to follow both written and verbal instructions; ability to complete and maintain basic written reports.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and another language, and familiarity with the operation of photocopying and audiovisual equipment is highly desirable.
Involves exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical demands include the ability to reach, handle, and manipulate objects; communicate verbally and audibly; occasional near visual acuity and frequent far visual acuity.
