Job Summary

The American Library Association (ALA) is seeking an experienced professional to serve as the Associate Executive Director for Public Policy and Advocacy. This role will be responsible for representing libraries on Capitol Hill, directing and managing the advocacy and public policy staff, and building relationships with federal and regional lawmakers to promote policies that benefit libraries and library users.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the Public Policy and Advocacy staff, budget, and Washington DC office facility.
  • Develop and implement effective advocacy and public policy strategies to promote the interests of libraries and library users.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Congressional staff, coalition partners, and Washington media.
  • Represent ALA's interests on Capitol Hill and in the executive branch, and work to raise the visibility of the library and information sector.
  • Manage the development and implementation of ALA's legislative priorities, including appropriations, education, and library services.
  • Collaborate with ALA staff, member leaders, and other stakeholders to advance ALA's mission and core values.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in public policy, foreign affairs, law, or related field preferred.
  • Seven or more years of supervisory experience leading communications, marketing, media or public relations in an association, higher education, corporate, large library, or large non-profit setting with demonstrated success.
  • Minimum of ten years of relevant experience in advocacy and governmental relations.
  • Registered Lobbyist.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with other staff and member leaders.
  • Proven success in building and cultivating key relationships and meeting strategic goals.
  • Strong project management, collaborative, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Strong presence and credibility and demonstrated abilities in crisis communication.
