Position Objective:
Under minimal supervision, guarantees timely and precise services for patients, nursing staff, physicians, and other healthcare personnel. Assesses and interprets the legitimacy and safety of medication orders and prescriptions. Oversees the quality of pharmaceutical services rendered. Dispenses medications in compliance with legal standards. Provides guidance to staff and clients regarding pharmaceuticals and therapeutic regimens. Maintains meticulous records. Oversees the activities of support staff and verifies their tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Reviews electronic and written medication orders to ensure clarity, appropriate dosage, scheduling, potential drug interactions, and contraindications. Engages directly with physicians, hospice nurses, or nursing homes for any necessary clarifications or modifications.


2. Supervises the preparation of patient medications utilizing standard techniques and protocols, encompassing all medications, prescriptions, controlled substances, IVs, and IV admixtures.


3. Effectively collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, administrators, physicians, residents, resident families, nursing directors, and nursing staff, while adhering to state and federal regulations.

4. Directs and oversees pharmacy technicians in the correct packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications.

5. Proficiently operates the outpatient computer system and prepares, fills, and dispenses outpatient charity prescriptions as required.

6. Engages in drug therapy monitoring, evaluating various factors including: a) appropriateness of administration route and method, b) potential therapeutic duplication, c) drug-drug interactions, d) drug-food interactions, e) drug-lab interactions, f) drug-disease interactions, g) pharmacokinetics analysis of lab results, h) safety and efficacy of drug therapy, i) cost-effective therapeutic alternatives, j) therapeutic appropriateness of medications, and k) assessment of patient diagnosis, medical history, and relevant physical findings. Adheres to OBRA standards for patient counseling on prescriptions.

7. Maintains departmental medication inventory levels by checking stock and ordering supplies and medications as necessary. Keeps a perpetual inventory system. Organizes invoices to comply with legal standards. Inspects pharmacy stock for expiration dates and appropriate stock levels.


8. Consults with and advises physicians and nursing staff on matters related to the selection, procurement, distribution, storage, and safe usage of medications.

9. Maintains records as mandated by departmental, state, and federal regulations. Researches drug information for physicians, nursing staff, patients, and other healthcare professionals.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy and licensure in the State of Iowa.


Must possess the ability to work autonomously, prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and respond swiftly to urgent situations.

Basic typing skills and familiarity with computer functions are essential. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
