Position Overview
The Lead Academic Consultant plays a pivotal role within the MA Clinical Psychology Program at Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA), directly reporting to the Chair of the MA in Psychology (MAP). This position is dedicated to fostering student achievement by developing systems, procedures, and proactive measures that ensure students remain on their academic paths. The Lead Academic Consultant builds supportive relationships with students and collaborates with MAP faculty, administrators, and staff to cultivate a shared commitment to student success.
The Lead Academic Consultant clarifies institutional policies and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters, working closely with various institutional support teams to address student inquiries and needs promptly and effectively. This role assesses student support requirements to facilitate referrals to program faculty, university offices, or community services, ensuring all aspects are managed appropriately and successfully.
Key Responsibilities
Student Advising and Support
- Engage with newly admitted students to ensure readiness and address any outstanding issues that may hinder a successful transition.
- Provide guidance on institutional policies, program requirements, clinical training expectations, and grievance procedures.
- Support faculty in addressing student advisement concerns.
- Design and conduct training sessions for faculty and staff, equipping them with resources to enhance student academic and professional success.
- Collaborate with institutional staff to ensure timely and strategic responses to student inquiries, fostering an enriching student experience while upholding academic integrity.
- Encourage students to take responsibility for their choices and understand the implications of those choices on their success.
- Empower students to maintain strong connections with the institution and its community.
- Advise on alternative scheduling options to support students in meeting their academic timelines.
- Oversee registration processes, petition applications, course transfers, and traineeship documentation in partnership with other personnel.
- Maintain detailed records and spreadsheets to track student progress and advising needs.
- Assist in data collection for assessing program outcomes.
- Manage electronic student files and academic schedules.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of the MAP degree program and its concentrations, including requirements and policies.
Student Retention
- Conduct outreach to students at risk of not meeting academic standards, including follow-ups for those facing academic or financial aid warnings.
- Monitor student progress closely to identify at-risk scenarios and develop strategies to enhance student success.
- Track student progress towards graduation requirements, focusing on retaining at-risk students.
- Organize events, seminars, and activities to promote student success.
- Advocate for students in addressing requests and complaints.
- Meet with students as needed to provide support.
- Create and manage spreadsheets for course assignments and instructor allocations, ensuring timely course assignments.
- Assist in planning class schedules for upcoming academic terms.
- Participate in campus safety and behavioral intervention teams to address student concerns.
- Support the execution of on-campus events, including graduate preparation meetings.
- Engage with student council initiatives and events, promoting participation among advisees.
Clinical Training Support
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of California Marriage and Family Therapy licensure requirements and relevant out-of-state licensing criteria to effectively advise students.
- Collaborate with Clinical Training Office staff during the student conferral process.
- Assist students with their clinical training needs and requests.
- Work closely with faculty regarding student preparedness for clinical training and overall suitability concerns.
Additional duties may be assigned by the MAP Chair as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in an educational environment, including at least 1 year of counseling experience; student advising experience in higher education, particularly in adult-oriented programs, is preferred.
- Proven ability to connect with and build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite is required.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving and time management abilities.
