Position Overview: The Payload Launch Site Support Services (PLSSS) Program at Lockheed Martin Space is dedicated to providing comprehensive launch processing support for our esteemed government clientele. This program encompasses critical elements such as spacecraft launch preparations, transportation operations, and the operation and maintenance of processing facilities. The primary operational hub is situated at Vandenberg AFB, CA, with additional support required at various locations.


As a vital member of our engineering team, you will engage in a diverse range of Mechanical Engineering design and operational responsibilities.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, operate, and maintain propellant loading systems, instrumentation, and data collection processes to facilitate spacecraft fueling operations.
  • Design, operate, and maintain mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems essential for spacecraft transportation and launch pad activities.
  • Execute mechanical engineering tasks related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems, HVAC controls, chilled and hot water distribution, and fire suppression systems.
  • Conduct evaluations of system performance and provide recommendations for design modifications or equipment repairs as necessary.
  • Utilize troubleshooting expertise to identify and resolve mechanical-related challenges.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with project specifications and business objectives, delivering comprehensive system-level outcomes.
  • Oversee the development, installation, and operation of new hardware and software systems.
  • Ensure timely project completion within established budgetary constraints.
Basic Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to identify technical challenges and offer sound recommendations for system issues and anomaly responses.
  • Practical experience in Mechanical Engineering operations and/or maintenance within an industrial or commercial setting.
  • Capability to work in a launch site environment, including the ability to navigate stairs and evacuate the launch complex while utilizing breathing apparatus if necessary.
  • Willingness to support periodic travel, overtime, and alternate shifts as required.
  • Experience in drafting technical documents or procedures.
  • Proficiency in presenting technical designs and information effectively.


This role necessitates special access to support the program, requiring the selected candidate to be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph.Desired Skills:

Experience in a design-build environment. Familiarity with testing and troubleshooting pneumatic and fluid integrated systems. Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision. Demonstrated teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills. Operational experience with high-value, unique mechanical systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems supporting spacecraft transportation, propellant loading, and launch pad operations. Experience in a design, build, and test environment. Expertise in test planning, execution, and technical documentation. Proficient in presenting technical information to leadership, team members, suppliers, vendors, and government clients. Familiarity with MAXIMO. Knowledge of fluid dynamics. Experience with HVAC systems. Proficient in solid modeling design using CREO/PRO-E and AutoCAD. Basic structural analysis skills, including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Understanding of chemistry, particularly hypergolic fuels (propellants) and gas systems.Security Clearance Statement: This position requires a government security clearance; candidates must be US Citizens for consideration.

Pay Rate:


The annual base salary range for this position in California and New York (excluding most major metropolitan areas), Colorado, Hawaii, Washington, or Washington DC is $100,400 - $192,500. This salary information serves as a general guideline, with Lockheed Martin considering various factors such as position scope, candidate experience, education, key skills, and market conditions when extending an offer.
