Launch Operations Mechanical Engineer

Position Overview:
The Payload Launch Site Support Services (PLSSS) Program at Lockheed Martin is dedicated to delivering essential launch processing support for our esteemed government clients. The program encompasses critical aspects such as spacecraft launch preparations, transportation operations, and the management of processing facilities. The primary operational base is located in California, with additional support required at various sites.
As a vital member of our engineering team, you will engage in a diverse range of Mechanical Engineering design and operational responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, operate, and maintain systems for propellant loading, instrumentation, and data collection to facilitate spacecraft fueling activities.
- Design, operate, and maintain mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems that are integral to spacecraft transportation and launch pad functions.
- Execute mechanical engineering tasks related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems, including HVAC controls and chilled/hot water distribution systems.
- Conduct evaluations of system performance and provide recommendations for design modifications or equipment repairs as necessary.
- Utilize expertise in troubleshooting to propose effective solutions for mechanical-related challenges.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure clarity on project specifications and business requirements, delivering comprehensive system-level outcomes.
- Oversee the development, installation, and operational readiness of new hardware and software systems.
- Ensure timely project completion within established budget constraints.
- Proven ability to identify technical challenges and offer informed recommendations for system issues and anomaly responses.
- Practical experience in Mechanical Engineering operations and/or maintenance within an industrial or commercial setting.
- Capability to work in a launch site environment, including the ability to navigate stairs and evacuate the launch complex with necessary safety equipment.
- Willingness to support periodic travel, overtime, and alternative shifts as required.
- Experience in drafting technical documents or procedures.
- Proficiency in presenting technical designs and information effectively.
This role necessitates special access to support the program, requiring the selected candidate to be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph.
Desired Skills:
- Background in a design-build environment.
- Experience in testing and troubleshooting pneumatic and fluid integrated systems.
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal oversight.
- Demonstrated teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Operational experience with unique, high-value mechanical systems, including those supporting spacecraft transportation, propellant loading, and launch pad operations.
- Familiarity with design, build, and test environments.
- Experience in test planning, execution, and technical documentation.
- Proficient in presenting technical information to leadership, team members, suppliers, vendors, and government clients.
- Knowledge of MAXIMO.
- Understanding of fluid dynamics and HVAC systems.
- Proficient in solid modeling design using CREO/PRO-E and AutoCAD.
- Capable of performing basic structural analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Knowledge of chemistry, particularly hypergolic fuels and gas systems.
Work Environment:
This position is primarily onsite at a designated Lockheed Martin facility, supporting a full-time work schedule. Lockheed Martin offers various alternate work schedules to enhance flexibility for employees.
