Job Title: Recovery Coach, Moms Do Care

Compensation: $21.42 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY: The Recovery Coach (RC) plays a vital role within the Moms Do Care initiative, assisting individuals facing challenges related to substance use. This position focuses on providing peer recovery support services specifically tailored for pregnant, post-partum, and parenting individuals dealing with substance use disorders. Candidates must have personal experience as a parenting individual in recovery. The RC is dedicated to helping these individuals reach their personal health and wellness goals. By utilizing a harm reduction framework, the RC supports those seeking lasting recovery as well as those who may prefer safer substance use practices. A comprehensive understanding of the recovery process, the ability to deliver personalized health messages, and a knack for connecting patients with BNHC and community resources are essential for this role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Promote the Moms Do Care program within the community to enhance patient access, including outreach to local healthcare facilities and treatment providers.
  2. Foster professional relationships with current and prospective BNHC patients to effectively provide peer recovery support.
  3. Collaborate with Behavioral Health Clinicians to facilitate support groups for pregnant, post-partum, and parenting individuals.
  4. Design and execute wellness and relapse prevention strategies with patients.
  5. Implement harm reduction techniques, including overdose prevention education and access to Narcan (naloxone).
  6. Provide relevant recovery information and referrals to assist individuals in improving their recovery journey and minimizing risky behaviors.
  7. Offer continuous support and follow-up to promote recovery, health, and overall wellbeing.
  8. Maintain open communication with community organizations and healthcare providers to enhance resource availability.
  9. Utilize non-judgmental language and motivational interviewing techniques to help patients articulate and prioritize their needs.
  10. Gather and disseminate reliable information on health topics pertinent to the population served.
  11. Facilitate warm handoffs to the Moms Do Care program.
  12. Document patient interactions in the electronic medical record system.
  13. Perform clerical tasks such as answering calls and managing appointment scheduling.
  14. Participate in required departmental meetings and training sessions.
  15. Adhere to regulations safeguarding patient confidentiality and privacy.
  16. Undertake additional duties as assigned.

SCOPE OF PRACTICE: The Recovery Coach is authorized to perform the following activities:

  • Motivate and celebrate patient achievements.
  • Provide constructive feedback and suggestions to assist patients in meeting their recovery objectives.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, exemplifying healthy living and sharing recovery knowledge.
  • Assist patients in identifying and resolving challenges in a supportive manner.
  • Act as a liaison to the recovery community and various support services.
  • Advocate for patient needs.
  • Employ motivational interviewing to help patients develop wellness and relapse prevention plans.
  • Complete wellness and relapse prevention plans with program participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research.
  • Familiarity with community resources, especially those related to substance use.
  • Understanding of recovery principles and personal experience with substance use disorder and motherhood is essential.
  • Experience with electronic health records is advantageous.
  • Ability to apply cultural competency and equity principles in patient care.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certified Addictions Recovery Coach (CARC) is preferred; completion of Recovery Coach Academy and progress toward certification is acceptable.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The role is situated in a dynamic community health center located in an urban area. Physical demands include the ability to lift light equipment (up to 20 lbs.) and engage in some walking. The work environment may involve interruptions and high-stress situations due to the nature of the services provided. Flexibility in working hours may be required to meet patient and community needs.
