Job Overview

The hospice aide serves as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to deliver essential services that cater to the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort. This role involves observing patients, documenting care provided, and reporting any significant changes in their condition.

Key Responsibilities

The hospice aide's duties encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Addressing personal care needs promptly after receiving patient assignments, and notifying the Case Manager if unable to fulfill a task.
  • Engaging with patients and families using effective communication techniques, ensuring ethical and respectful care while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ensuring patient safety by using equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen).
  • Providing personal care services such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
  • Aiding in feeding patients when necessary.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, following established competency standards.
  • Monitoring and caring for patients' skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
  • Reporting on patients' conditions and any significant changes to the Case Manager, while being mindful of the dynamics involving caregivers or others in the patient's environment.
  • Supporting patients in ambulation and exercise as directed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
  • Facilitating normal range of motion and assisting with transfers and positioning as instructed.
  • Assisting with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations, such as reminders.
  • Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, and light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Carrying out range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as directed by the hospice nurse.
  • Offering respite care for patients, families, or caregivers when present.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly living environment for patients as assigned.
  • Adhering to the organization's documentation standards and maintaining professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Respecting the personal needs and environment of patients and their families.

The above responsibilities represent a summary of the primary duties performed by individuals in this role. Employees may be asked to undertake additional job-related tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of state-required training.
  • A minimum of 75 hours of classroom instruction and supervised practical training, with 16 hours of classroom training completed prior to a mandatory 16 hours of practical training.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care provided.
  • Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently, while being comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying.
  • Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrates patience, tact, and good personal hygiene.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable, insured vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a probationary period to ensure competency in the required qualifications, documented by the supervisor.

Limitations of the Role

The hospice aide is not permitted to perform tasks that are classified as nursing practices according to the Nurse Practice Act. Specifically, the aide will not administer medications, take physician's orders, or perform procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.
