Job Overview

The hospice aide is a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, operating under the guidance of a registered nurse to deliver essential services tailored to the personal needs of patients, ensuring their comfort and dignity. The hospice aide plays a crucial role in monitoring patient conditions, documenting care provided, and communicating observations effectively.

Key Responsibilities

As a hospice aide, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:
  • Addressing personal care needs promptly and efficiently, while reporting any challenges to the Case Manager.
  • Engaging with patients and families using effective communication strategies, maintaining ethical standards and confidentiality.
  • Ensuring patient safety by utilizing equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen devices).
  • Providing personal care services such as bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens as required.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as needed.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping when assigned.
  • Aiding in feeding patients as necessary.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, as instructed.
  • Monitoring and caring for the patient's skin to prevent pressure sores.
  • Reporting significant changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager, while being aware of the dynamics involving caregivers and family members.
  • Supporting patients in mobility and exercise as directed by healthcare professionals.
  • Facilitating range of motion exercises and safe transfers as instructed.
  • Assisting with self-administered medications as permitted by state regulations.
  • Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, along with light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Carrying out simple therapeutic procedures as directed, ensuring competency in skills.
  • Offering respite care for patients and their families when present.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized living environment for the patient as required.
  • Adhering to the organization's standards for documentation and professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives and team activities.

The above responsibilities are intended to provide a representative overview of the primary duties associated with this role. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Completion of state-required training.
  • A minimum of 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with specific hours allocated for each.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written instructions and document care accurately.
  • Understanding of hospice care principles and comfort in providing specialized support to terminally ill patients.
  • Positive references from previous employers.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while being sensitive to issues surrounding death and dying.
  • Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, and frail individuals.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
  • Demonstrated patience, tact, and good personal hygiene.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a probationary period to ensure competency in the role.

Limitations of the Role

The hospice aide is not authorized to perform tasks classified as nursing under the Nurse Practice Act, including administering medications or executing procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse.
