The Press Operator plays a crucial role in our production team, reporting directly to the Plant Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Achieve and surpass production targets for the printing press.
- Oversee the entire operation of the press, ensuring the quality of all printed materials.
- Guide and train the press assistant, ensuring they can operate the press independently when needed.
- Manage the setup for print jobs, including plates, sleeves, ink matching, and verifying film.
- Ensure print quality by monitoring print position, copy accuracy, UPC codes, registration, and impressions.
- Maintain accurate records of production and materials in the Shop Floor computer system.
- Return all materials to their designated locations with proper identification after completing an order.
- Report any damaged or worn plates to the Shift Leader for timely replacement.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the setup and use of web monitoring systems.
- Understand and execute the make-ready process effectively.
- Apply tension controls appropriately for various substrates.
- Set and demonstrate the correct impression on plates and anilox rollers.
- Draw accurate dimensions for finished and converted bags.
- Adjust dot gains and densities based on readings to match proofs.
- Complete training on plate mounting procedures and their relevance to printing.
- Collaborate with maintenance to perform operator-based maintenance on machines.
- Handle hazardous waste according to established procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Shift Leader or Production Manager.
- Prior experience in printing press operations is essential, specifically in:
- Flexographic printing - working with film and/or paper
- Multi-colored press operation
- Web-fed printing machine operation
- In-depth knowledge of company printing procedures and quality standards is required.
- Technical understanding of inks, colors, and film properties is advantageous.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, artwork, and specification sheets is necessary.
- Familiarity with specific machine capabilities is required.
- Completion of Press Assistant levels I and II is mandatory.
- Technical training or equivalent apprenticeship of up to three years is required for proficiency in this role.
