Job Title - Exceptional Education Support Specialist

Supervisor: Principal

Job Objective:
  • To assist the special education services instructor in delivering instructional and support services to students with disabilities.
Essential Qualifications:
  1. Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited institution or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under applicable child protection laws.
  3. Willingness to work in a demanding and dynamic environment.
  4. Proficient in both oral and written communication with students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, emphasizing effective communication and collaboration with diverse groups.
  6. Capable of following verbal and written instructions accurately.
  7. Physical capability to perform job responsibilities, including strength, agility, and mobility.
  8. Proficient in using technology for communication, data management, and report generation.
  9. Ability to accept constructive feedback and follow directions.
  10. Physical ability to assist with student toileting and hygiene needs.
  11. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and provide physical support as necessary.
  12. Flexibility in working hours to assist students on special education transportation.
  13. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential.
  14. Other qualifications as required by the Board.
Key Responsibilities and Functions:
  1. Support the educational institution's vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Reinforce lesson concepts with individual or groups of students, verify work accuracy, and present additional assignments as directed by the instructor.
  3. Assist students in utilizing books, computers, classroom materials, and other resources.
  4. Help maintain records related to attendance, grades, test scores, or behavior as assigned.
  5. Facilitate the transfer of students in and out of mobility devices and onto transportation.
  6. Assist students with toileting needs, including diapering and lifting.
  7. Support self-care and movement needs of students with special requirements (positioning, lifting, transferring, etc.).
  8. Assist in food service, including obtaining and serving meals to students.
  9. Manage student behavior, including crisis intervention when necessary, and implement behavior management strategies.
  10. Facilitate the use of mobility aids such as braces, walkers, and tricycles.
  11. Support teachers during field trips by addressing students' physical needs and maintaining discipline.
  12. Assist transportation staff in maintaining discipline and addressing students' physical needs.
  13. Provide assistance on special education transportation as directed by school leadership.
  14. Support teachers in directing activities and leading play for assigned student groups.
  15. Perform basic health and first aid tasks for special education students as directed by a school nurse.
  16. Implement behavior management plans as instructed by the teacher.
  17. Adjust instructional materials as needed to meet student needs.
  18. Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings upon request.
  19. Maintain confidentiality regarding school and workplace matters in compliance with applicable laws.
  20. Perform duties with professionalism and courtesy.
  21. Demonstrate initiative in identifying areas for improvement within responsibilities.
  22. Respond to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  23. Submit required reports and records accurately and on time using technology or other means as directed.
  24. Care for school resources and materials responsibly.
  25. Utilize collaboration skills to work effectively as part of a team.
  26. Adhere to school policies, administrative procedures, and relevant laws.
  27. Report absences and take leave in accordance with established policies.
  28. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Exceptional Education Director.
Employment Terms: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be assessed according to the Board's evaluation policy for personnel.
