I. POSITION SUMMARY

Overview: The International Services Office (ISO) at The George Washington University plays a crucial role in promoting international educational exchange through its various services and initiatives. This office serves as the main administrative, programming, and advisory hub for the university's international community. The Manager of International Student and Scholar Advising will work collaboratively within the ISO and the Office for Study Abroad (OSA). This role requires a passion for and capability to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment while managing F-1 and J-1 immigration responsibilities. The Manager will oversee exchange programs for the university, which includes interpreting and signing necessary immigration documents for initial attendance, processing school transfers, extensions of nonimmigrant stay, employment authorizations, re-entry, and changes in immigration status.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, authorize, and prepare I-20 and DS-2019 forms, ensure the accuracy of student data and records, and provide individual and group guidance to international students and scholars on immigration, academic, and personal issues.
  • Assist in the formulation, integration, and execution of institutional policies concerning the sponsorship of international students.
  • Supervise the Exchange Coordinator, manage inbound international student exchanges, and maintain relationships with exchange partners.
  • Oversee the Senior International Services Associate, acting as the advisory contact for International Admissions processed by the ISO.
  • Manage daily J-1 Scholar requests, orientations, and departmental inquiries.
  • Engage in welcome center check-ins, orientation sessions, and programs to support students in their transition to the university and the U.S.
  • Guide the Exchange Coordinator in providing assistance to partner universities involved in exchange programs.
  • Act as the advisory contact for the ISO Admissions of over 3,000 international students processed by the ISO.
  • Represent the ISO at various internal and external meetings as directed by the Assistant Provost and/or Associate Director.

Perform additional related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not prevent the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Eligible candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field along with 6 years of pertinent professional experience, or a Master's degree or higher in a relevant discipline with 4 years of applicable professional experience. The degree must be obtained by the start date of the position. Educational requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to operate effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment, manage a substantial workload, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Exhibit exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English, alongside strong organizational and interpersonal abilities.
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Commitment to maintaining client confidentiality and a strong service orientation.
  • Preferred supervisory or management experience in a higher education context.
  • Experience as a PDSO, DSO, RO, and/or ARO or involvement with university exchange programs is advantageous.
  • Significant hands-on experience with advising international students and scholars (F, J, H-1B) at higher education institutions, along with knowledge of exchange processes is preferred.
