The UC Irvine Health School of Medicine's Department of Neurology, ranked among the nation's leading neurology departments by the National Institutes of Health, is dedicated to enhancing clinical care, education, and research for patients with a variety of neurological disorders. Our team consists of over 47 full-time faculty members who are committed to training future neurologists.

In this role, you will work under general supervision and in collaboration with the Department of Neurology faculty, providing direct patient care through comprehensive physical assessments and medical interventions within the Neurocritical Care (NCC) unit. You will conduct specialized neurological evaluations and general physical examinations, leveraging your advanced academic and clinical training in neurology.

Your Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant will oversee care related to Institutional Review Board (IRB) biomedical protocols in the NCC. This role involves collaboration with research staff in the development and execution of research initiatives, as well as sharing findings through publications and community outreach. You will adhere to a practice agreement with the Department of Neurology and maintain compliance with policies established by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice (CIDP) and the Medical Director.

Key Qualifications:

  • Advanced expertise in neurocritical care, which encompasses acute neurological emergencies.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in neurocritical care or a related field.
  • Exceptional communication skills to convey medical information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships across the healthcare system.
  • Proficient in performing diagnostic tests and interpreting results in accordance with established protocols.
  • Experience with specialized medical equipment and procedures, including invasive medical techniques.
  • Strong writing skills for documentation of medical reports and patient progress notes.
  • Must meet the legal requirements to practice as a Physician Assistant in California.
Essential Skills for Success

Mandatory:

  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant through the California Physician Assistant Board.
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant training program.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) required prior to employment commencement.
  • Active DEA Registration and compliance with Controlled Substances Education Course requirements.
  • National board certification by the NCCPA at the time of initial appointment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

Preferred:

  • At least 5 years of experience in neurocritical care or a related specialty.
  • Experience in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), particularly with neurology and neurosurgery patients.
