Job Summary

As a key member of our team, the Retention Specialist/SGA Advisor will play a vital role in coordinating day-to-day operations and activities related to our comprehensive student services program. This includes supporting the Student Government Association (SGA) in leadership development, organization, and professional etiquette, as well as coordinating and coaching SGA members in their roles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with Career Counselors to ensure all relevant parties are informed about at-risk students.
  • Enhance student success through personal and academic coaching, developmental workshops, increased student engagement, and referrals to other campus resources.
  • Meet regularly with identified students to assess their needs, assist with academic planning and goal setting, and monitor their attendance and academic progress.
  • Assist students in navigating academic and non-academic resources on campus, online, and in the community.
  • Employ various techniques to help students achieve their goals, including improving study skills, test-taking skills, and time management.
  • Serve as a mentor, role model, and facilitator, providing guidance and academic support for students.
  • Refer students to community organizations and social service agencies for assistance as needed.
  • Maintain documentation of all student interactions and generate regular performance reports summarizing student progress.
  • Maintain advising-related student records with necessary information for each individual student.
  • Develop strategies to meet program retention goals and work with campus administration and staff to improve operations in the Student Services area and student satisfaction rates.
  • Develop key metrics to track and report retention rates and outcomes for leadership committees.
  • Develop a written institutional retention plan, complete with historical analysis, goals, and strategies for managing, developing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive retention action plan.
  • Interpret existing retention practices and develop and implement new retention practices and policies to achieve retention goals.
  • Review, recommend, and implement improvements and enhancements to the consistency and quality of course offerings, course/program development, and curriculum.
  • Follow proper procedures and channels of communication.
  • Utilize daily data reports to develop accurate assessments and guide daily actions.
  • Facilitate monthly student services meetings to report progress and areas of concern, and present recommendations for modifications and adjustments to meet goals.
  • Analyze student attendance, student satisfaction, and other retention-related data to develop a protocol and strategies for reaching out to students for whom traditional retention programs have not been successful.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of individual overall retention strategies.
  • Collaborate and participate in maintaining a student and learner-centered philosophy and focus student services initiatives on successful student outcomes, including retention, graduation, placement, and transfer success.
  • Provide administrative oversight in the academic and social integration of the student into campus life, assisting the student in achieving their educational, career, and personal goals, and advocating for programs and services that students require to be successful in their academic career pursuits.
  • Provide administrative oversight for student attrition, retention, and re-entry activities in collaboration with all staff, including graduation, special events/programs/awards/appreciation days, and interventions such as student advocacy, mediation, conflict resolution, problem resolution, student clubs, and student development centers.
  • Prepare appropriate reports, monitor and report on student retention data, prepare trend analysis indicating variances from year to year or month to month, and project student retention figures for strategic decision making/planning.
  • Utilize a tracking system for early identification of at-risk students and contact the student to provide success strategies, services, and resources.
  • Act as a liaison with students and the campus to enhance services and act as a student advocate and mediator.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to SGA members regarding performance and engagement in SGA and leadership.
  • Supervise SGA-coordinated/sponsored events.
  • Promote SGA-sponsored activities and initiatives.
  • Recruit potential SGA members and coordinate incentive/team-building opportunities for Student Government.
  • Coordinate and promote evening leadership programs, including consistent extended training opportunities for student leaders.
  • Coordinate and implement monthly evening leadership curriculum.
  • Facilitate evening leadership class.
  • Liaison with outside partners and center staff to coordinate guest speakers for extended leadership training.
  • Advise trainees in creating and maintaining student-run clubs.
  • May participate in Evening and Weekend studies programming.
  • Work with SGA members in the operation of the Student Store/Canteen.
  • Involvement in the process of SCA Executive Board Members election.
  • Participate in the Centers HEALS programming and year-to-year initiatives.
  • Support students in promoting evening clubs.
  • All other duties assigned.
Requirements

Qualifications:

Minimum: Associate's degree. One-year related experience.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree. Previous Job Corps experience.

Knowledge: Knowledge of Job Corps or similar training program. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Excellent presentation skills. Ability to effectively relate to students. Excellent organizational skills.
