Automation and Controls Technician Position Overview

Arclin, Inc. is on the lookout for an Automation Controls Technician to enhance our operational efficiency at our facility. The Automation Controls Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of the plant's automation instruments, DeltaV distributed control system, and the industrial local area network. This position involves routine maintenance, calibration, and necessary replacements of equipment to maintain optimal performance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute installation, programming, and upkeep of all plant instrumentation and control systems (DeltaV), including daily preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical instrumentation and control system issues effectively.
  • Oversee and conduct calibrations for all instruments according to established schedules, maintaining accurate records.
  • Ensure alignment of plant automation control systems with quality control systems to guarantee data integrity.
  • Act as the primary auditor for all electrical controls contractor work and initiate site Management of Change (MOC) processes as needed.
  • Create and manage documentation related to control systems, including ladder logic and wiring diagrams.
  • Review and update P&IDs, loop sheets, and electrical schematics.
  • Provide additional support for general plant equipment, including Variable Frequency Drives, PLCs, and other electronic devices.
  • Complete tasks assigned by the Plant Engineer or designated personnel.
  • Advise on necessary upgrades and modifications to instrumentation and PLCs, collaborating with relevant teams to schedule these activities.
  • Assist in preparing engineering analyses for projects, including design, cost analysis, and lifecycle assessments related to process controls instrumentation.
  • Manage improvement projects related to electrical controls with budgets under $10,000.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge base of automation control systems across batch and continuous processes.
  • Participate in MOCs, HAZOPs, PHAs, JHAs, and functional description reviews.
  • Engage actively in Plant Safety Culture initiatives, including the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC).
  • Be available for on-call support during production issues related to electrical or controls failures.
Qualifications:
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree focusing on electrical or controls systems is preferred; however, candidates with relevant practical experience may also be considered.
  • Certifications such as CCST, Red Seal, or ICET are advantageous; completion of Arc Flash training will be required once in the role if not already completed.
  • Proficiency in Distributive Process Controls Systems (DeltaV) is essential; knowledge of Programmable Logic Control, HMI, and other automation systems is a plus.
  • Experience with AB RS Logix 5000, Control Logix, Powerflex drives, and HMI/SCADA systems is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with process simulation software is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with industrial electrical systems, including switchgear and motor control systems.
  • Experience in installing, calibrating, configuring, and troubleshooting process instrumentation such as pressure, temperature, level, and flow is a plus.
  • Knowledge of PCs, LANs, and computer hardware/software installation and support is required.
  • Understanding of DC and AC drive systems is essential.
  • Familiarity with quality control and ISO 9000 management systems is beneficial.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively while adhering to established timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with all levels of plant staff and corporate engineering teams.
  • Capability to perform fieldwork, including wiring, component installation, and instrument calibrations, while adhering to safety protocols.
