Job Summary

The State of Oklahoma is seeking a skilled Geographic Information Systems Specialist to join our team. As a GIS Specialist, you will be responsible for managing and analyzing geographical information, developing and maintaining GIS databases, and providing technical support to agency personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze spatial and attribute data using GIS software and display data using maps, reports, charts, and tables.
  • Create, maintain, and update databases using GIS, computer-aided drafting, and other software.
  • Manage multi-faceted GIS projects independently and as a member of a team.
  • Customize application software to provide GIS capabilities to agency personnel.
  • Conduct mapping research in the field and in the office to resolve conflicting information and ensure the accuracy of data.
  • Prepare technical presentations using the GIS interface and graphics software.
  • Provide technical support and assist in training others in GIS fundamentals and related subjects.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree in geographic information systems, geography, geology, cartography, archaeology, anthropology, natural resources, computer science, engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field is required. Two years of professional-level experience in GIS work is also required. Knowledge of GIS software, database design, and algebra, geometry, and trigonometry is necessary. Ability to communicate effectively, work independently, and think analytically is required.

Work Environment

This position is typically performed in an office setting with climate-controlled settings and exposure to mild noise levels. Long periods of sitting and daily use of computer and telephone are required. During and after disaster impacts, this position may be asked to participate in carrying out duties that are specific to a disaster with no notice, which could require extended work hours.
