Job Overview:

The Next Generation Additive Manufacturing Research Laboratory (NextGen AMRL) is actively seeking a dedicated and skilled Postdoctoral Scholar specializing in smart metal additive manufacturing (AM). The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigators to innovate and implement cutting-edge smart AM solutions aimed at real-time process oversight and optimization, ultimately enhancing the relationship between process, properties, and performance. A strong focus will be directed towards large-scale AM methodologies such as Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), Cold Spray AM (CSAM), Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), and Wire-Arc AM (WAAM), including hybrid approaches that combine additive and subtractive techniques.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will also play a vital role in organizing meetings with project stakeholders, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and documenting and disseminating research findings through various channels including presentations, reports, and academic publications. Additionally, the scholar will assist in preparing grant proposals to secure external funding.

Funding for this position is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, for a maximum duration of two years. U.S. Citizens or Green Card holders are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing AI-driven smart solutions for AM, including advanced machine learning techniques (familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow is advantageous)
  • Experience with robotics-integrated AM systems, particularly robotic WAAM, including robotic path planning (experience with ABB robots is a plus)
  • Knowledge and experience with large-scale metal AM technologies are beneficial
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a large multidisciplinary team
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English, evidenced by publications and contributions to proposal writing
