The Surgical Patient Advocate serves as a key resource and educator for patients and their families throughout the surgical and cancer care journey.
Essential Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associate's Degree, Diploma, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
A minimum of three years of nursing experience in a relevant field (Surgery/Oncology).
Proficient computer skills.
Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
Strong organizational capabilities.
Robust critical thinking skills.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid New Jersey State Professional Registered Nurse License.
Key Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Surgical Patient Advocate at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Treating all patients with respect and professionalism.
2. Delivering competent clinical care during patient visits and serving as a subject matter expert in the specialty area.
3. Facilitating effective communication between patients and healthcare professionals.
4. Providing educational resources and support to patients and their families.
5. Greeting patients warmly and efficiently managing their information.
6. Accurately completing physician orders.
7. Guiding patients through the healthcare system while advocating for their needs.
8. Supporting patients and families in managing the emotional aspects of cancer care.
9. Coordinating appointments with healthcare providers to ensure timely access to diagnostic and therapeutic services, accommodating patient needs whenever possible.
This includes triaging urgent calls, providing information about appointment availability, and general practice inquiries.
If necessary, directing calls to the appropriate personnel or department for further assistance.11. Communicating professionally with physicians.
12. Relaying messages to clinicians and following up as needed.
13. Ensuring that all necessary materials, including films, pathology reports, and lab results, are prepared for each new patient visit in advance.
15. Efficiently preparing new patient records in accordance with practice standards.
16. Gathering patient clinical information to facilitate appropriate referral scheduling.
17. Encouraging referrals and scheduling new appointments based on clinical needs, adhering to established protocols or physician directives.
18. Proactively identifying and addressing barriers to care that may hinder timely and appropriate treatment for patients.
19. Connecting patients with resources and social support systems.
20. Assisting patients in accessing financial services for healthcare needs.
21. When applicable, collaborating with researchers and clinical trial teams to identify potential research subjects.
23. Engaging in community education initiatives to enhance public awareness.
24. Participating in practice hours and various practice locations as required.
