Farm Operations Manager

Job Summary

The Farm Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the farm, including the management of farm crew, pasture and rangeland management, and maintenance of farm infrastructure. This position requires strong leadership and communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise farm crew and ensure the efficient management of farm operations
  • Oversee pasture and rangeland management, including land preparation, planting, fertilization, and harvesting of forage
  • Maintain records of all pasture management activities, including planting, fertilization, pesticide applications, and mechanical treatments
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports regarding overall center pasture conditions, vehicle maintenance logs, equipment inventory and maintenance logs
  • Purchase items necessary for day-to-day operations, including repair of pickup trucks, farm tractors and equipment, plumbing, fencing construction and repairs, and building maintenance
  • Monitor and manage a budget of $350,000-plus for farm-related expenditures
  • Oversee inspections of fuel tank and containment area, pesticide storage facility, fire extinguishers, fuel fill log, and worker protection standards
  • Provide safety training for farm workers
  • Work with faculty, staff, graduate students, and student interns to facilitate research in improved pastures and rangeland ecosystems

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience working on an agricultural operation, including supervision of others
  • Experience operating field equipment, including tractors exceeding 100 hp, hay equipment, and other equipment utilized to manage pastures and rangelands
  • Pesticide applicator's license, able to obtain prescribed burning certification within 18 months of hire
  • Proficient in typing, excel spreadsheets, and computer navigation
