Custodian II Job Summary

The Custodian II is a key member of the facilities team at Teachers College Columbia University, responsible for maintaining high cleaning standards in both residential and academic buildings. This role ensures a safe and clean environment for students, staff, and faculty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform various cleaning tasks indoors and outdoors, including sweeping, vacuuming, and wet mopping floors and stairs.
  • Check and empty garbage and recycling containers, and replace them with clean bags.
  • Take garbage and recycling outside for sidewalk pickup in accordance with the Sanitation Department schedule.
  • Clean and disinfect suite, common men's and women's restrooms, and common kitchens.
  • Replenish restroom supplies, remove trash, and replace liners.
  • Monitor supply and equipment inventory, and report needs to supervisor.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and perform other related tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school education or GED.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, staff, and students.
  • Ability to perform effective cleaning techniques and operate cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum of 50 pounds) on a regular basis.
  • Physical mobility, vision, and hearing acuity appropriate to the efficient and effective cleaning workstation tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced knowledge of project cleaning equipment.
  • 5 years of work with hazardous chemicals.
  • 7 years experience in stripping and waxing floors, extracting carpets, and cutting hard floor surfaces.
Work Environment:

This is an onsite position, requiring the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to maintenance requests in a timely manner.
