Individuals with 8 years or more of relevant experience can anticipate offers approaching the midpoint of the salary spectrum. Metra stands as one of the largest and most intricate commuter rail networks in North America, catering to Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The organization connects communities in Northeastern Illinois by delivering safe, dependable, and efficient commuter services.

The Engineering division is tasked with the construction and upkeep of the majority of Metra's fixed assets, including facilities, stations, bridges, tracks, electrical systems, telecommunications, and signaling infrastructures. This department also oversees the condition of and aids in the maintenance of fixed assets on the freight lines utilized by Metra trains. The Engineering Department is segmented into two primary groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance.

Reporting to the Manager of Back Office Systems, this role will serve as the technical lead for back office engineers within the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) team; assist in the creation of training materials, documentation, and system enhancements; engage in system architecture design, deployment, and maintenance; and analyze and resolve intricate systems challenges.

The core responsibilities encompass: Overseeing the implementation of CAD and related systems in collaboration with user departments and various teams to evaluate and coordinate system updates in both laboratory and production settings, troubleshoot issues, and manage functionality modifications. Assess Metra's dispatch requirements and propose solutions; engage in system design and analysis discussions; and formulate system requirement specifications. Serve as a subject matter expert for the CAD team, possessing in-depth knowledge of Metra's dispatch system prerequisites, vendor designs, and CAD configurations to provide detailed analyses of complex issues and participate in multidisciplinary troubleshooting sessions. Develop testing scenarios and environments for the CAD team to facilitate the continuous delivery of new software and database updates. Evaluate software and database performance, identify challenges, and propose solutions. Act as the primary technical liaison for the entire dispatch ecosystem, collaborating with end users on system updates and issues; working with vendors on systems and application development and expansion; and researching and recommending new CAD technologies. Advocate for safe work practices and maintain a secure work environment. Perform additional related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or Computer Science, or in lieu of a degree, a combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that totals four years in the development, maintenance, or support of computer-aided systems.
  2. In addition to #1, a minimum of seven years of experience is required, encompassing a blend of developing, maintaining, or supporting computer-aided dispatch systems, railroad signaling systems, and/or complex computer systems.
  3. Extensive knowledge of systems engineering principles.
  4. Extensive knowledge of infrastructure planning and maintenance.
  5. Strong understanding of railroad Computer Aided Dispatch Systems and railroad operations.
  6. Good knowledge of IP-based, RF, and analog communication systems.
  7. Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  8. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Proficiency in developing and managing databases.
  10. Proficient in Linux and Windows system administration.
  11. Proficient in Microsoft 365.
  12. Proficient in Microsoft SQL or similar database systems.
  13. Ability to resolve complex issues in large-scale distributed systems.
  14. Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  15. Capability to train colleagues and system users.
  16. Must be available to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late afternoons, evenings, or weekends.
Preferred:
  1. Experience in Back Office Systems or railroad signaling systems.
  2. Experience with database systems such as Microsoft SQL.
