Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN) at CMU Health plays a crucial role in delivering nursing assistance to enhance patient care within the Surgery faculty practice. Responsibilities are determined based on patient needs and guided by the Clinical Practice Coordinator or Clinical Manager, ensuring effective nursing service delivery across all clinic functions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Efficiently handles patient inquiries, including prescription refills, equipment requests, and urgent care appointments.
  • Accurately documents patient interactions in accordance with nursing standards and institutional policies.
  • Processes orders for prescriptions, supplies, and diagnostic tests through electronic systems and phone communications.
  • Prepares examination rooms, ensuring all necessary equipment, supplies, and consent forms are ready for patient visits.
  • Conducts nursing assessments over the phone, providing patients with clear instructions for their next steps.
  • Confirms the purpose of patient visits and readies patients for examinations.
  • Records vital signs and gathers health and social histories as required.
  • Performs and documents clinical procedures and laboratory tests in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Delivers routine nursing support as directed by physicians, including assisting in office surgical procedures and trauma care.
  • Educates patients to ensure they understand physician directives and treatment plans.
  • Supports faculty physicians in providing a valuable educational experience for residents and medical students.
  • Commits to providing exceptional customer service to all patients.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as needed.

EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Must possess a degree in registered nursing.
  • Licensure: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Michigan State Board of Nursing is mandatory.
  • Certification: Valid CPR certification is required, with accepted certifications including BLS for Healthcare Professionals from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Aptitude: A solid understanding of the medical education process and a commitment to supporting it through active involvement.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication abilities to foster positive relationships in healthcare and educational environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is highly desirable.
  • Education: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in ambulatory care or home health settings is advantageous.
  • Leadership: Experience in supervisory or management roles is preferred.
  • Teamwork: A willingness to take on leadership responsibilities within a team setting.
