We are currently seeking a Soft Goods Materials Engineer, who will report to the Director of Manufacturing. This role is essential in supporting the development of systems required for designing and constructing artificial-gravity habitats. This is a full-time, exempt position based in our Long Beach location.

As a Soft Goods Materials Engineer at Vast, you will leverage your expertise, experience, and innovative thinking to lead the assessment, selection, and certification of materials at the forefront of space technology. Our team is engaged in creating advanced life support, thermal management, and propulsion systems, in addition to designing and constructing the interiors of a crew-rated space station. This role is critical, as it involves making informed decisions that are vital to the safety of future astronauts and passengers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the recommendations and requirements for non-metallic materials and processes for an artificial-gravity space station.
  • Evaluate and communicate the company's stance on material selection, off-gassing risks, flammability, and toxicity assessments for crewed environments.
  • Serve as the technical authority on polymers, soft goods, seals, paints, and adhesives/epoxies.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including life support, thermal control, and propulsion engineers, to ensure all materials and processes support safe crewed missions.
  • Lead design reviews with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ensure that all designs and systems are manufacturable and reliable from a materials perspective.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in materials science or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in materials and processes for space applications.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Master's degree in materials science or a related field.
  • Experience with soft goods, particularly in aerospace or crewed vehicles.
  • Understanding of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and their implications for vehicles and crew.
  • Experience with off-gassing of polymers and other non-metallic materials.
  • Familiarity with outgassing of materials in vacuum conditions.
  • Knowledge of flammability risks associated with various materials used in aerospace.
  • Insight into crewed space vehicles.
  • Understanding of gaseous oxygen systems and related materials, processes, and cleanliness standards.
  • Experience in toxicity assessments for human health risks.
  • Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms.
  • Experience with aerospace-specific electronics and coatings risks.
  • Familiarity with paints, epoxies, and coatings for aerospace applications.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques for metallic and fluid systems.
  • Able to thrive in a collaborative team environment, with frequent interactions with technicians, engineers, and management.
  • Highly self-motivated with strong organizational and communication skills, capable of prioritizing tasks in a high-pressure setting.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in materials science and additive manufacturing.
  • Preferred experience includes atomization, metal additive manufacturing, and injection molding.
  • Strong project management and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and execute research and development projects.
  • Capable of independently operating and modifying laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct materials characterization tests and prepare detailed reports.
  • Experience with metal alloy development for additive manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with laboratory testing methods for materials characterization.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and models.
Additional Requirements:
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends to meet critical project milestones.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted.
