About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Railserve, US as a key member of our operations team. As a Rail Car Handler, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives to transport freight and switch rail cars.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect locomotives before operation to ensure fuel, sand, water, and other supplies are in order.
  • Receive starting signals from foremen or helpers and move controls to move locomotives.
  • Interpret train orders, signals, and rules and regulations to operate locomotives safely and efficiently.
  • Assist crew leaders in training new employees.
  • Observe tracks for obstructions and prepare reports for accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
  • Lubricate moving parts of locomotives and handle train equipment safely.
  • Operate hand or ground throw switches, derails, gates, and control movement of equipment by radio, hands, and lantern.
  • Apply and release hand brakes to secure or move equipment and handle air hoses, wheel chocks, coupling, and uncoupling of rail cars.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Military experience is a plus.
  • Dependable and punctual attendance, with reliable transportation to work every day.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.
Physical Demands

This role requires frequent standing and walking, with occasional sitting, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights and have specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions
  • Modest to heavy physical effort involved, with lifting and carrying necessary equipment to cars to perform operations.
  • Climbing, walking, and balancing on top of cars.
  • Using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Following prescribed safety rules to avoid possible injury.
