Research and Development Intern

Purpose:

We are a diverse team at NSG Group/Pilkington that develops and tests innovative bonding systems on automotive glass, with a focus on failure analysis and quality control.

This internship involves hands-on experience with preparing and testing samples, primarily in the areas of bonding systems and materials science.

In addition, the intern will have a project, chosen based on company needs and intern interests, that they will be responsible for planning and executing, with our support.

Essential Functions:
  1. Assist with R&D experiments as needed, primarily related to bonding systems and materials science.
  2. Assemble, condition, and test laboratory samples to ensure quality and consistency.
  3. Collate data and write detailed lab reports to document findings and results.
  4. Participate in large-scale experiments (DOEs, etc.) within R&D and validation to drive innovation and improvement.
  5. Keep a detailed lab notebook of all testing performed to ensure accuracy and reproducibility.
  6. Enter data into appropriate data systems in a timely fashion to facilitate analysis and decision-making.
  7. Plan and execute intern project to apply theoretical knowledge and skills in a practical setting.
  8. Maintain clean, organized lab spaces and assist with sample disposal to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
  9. Log in and dispose of chemicals in accordance with HSE policies to ensure compliance and safety.
  10. Assist with health and safety initiatives, with direction, to promote a culture of safety and well-being.
  11. Assist with recycling program and other environmental initiatives as needed to reduce waste and promote sustainability.
  12. Adhere to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles to ensure integrity and professionalism.
  13. Perform other duties assigned by manager to support the team and achieve business objectives.

Qualifications Required:
  1. Pursuing an associate's or bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or chemistry.
  2. Familiar with Microsoft Office 365 and data analysis tools.
  3. Self-motivated, flexible individual willing to switch priorities and maintain background tasks between more urgent projects.
  4. Good observation, organizational, and note-taking skills.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Familiar with engineering math and basic statistics, or willing and able to learn.
Qualifications Desired:
  1. Interest in chemistry and surface structure.
