Position Overview:

The HSE Manager will report directly to the Plant Manager and will play a crucial role in formulating and disseminating the comprehensive safety and environmental strategy. This role is essential for identifying relevant regulations and potential risks across North America, ensuring that all operations align with compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and uphold a Safety Management System in accordance with international standards such as ISO45001, ensuring adherence to best practices in health and safety.
  • Facilitate collaboration on HSE matters across various departments.
  • Establish and maintain safety protocols, including policies, regulations, and operational instructions.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate both leading and lagging indicators, compiling accident statistics and ensuring accurate reporting of HSE data to the Group.
  • Oversee HSE performance metrics, initiate enhancements, and spearhead targeted safety initiatives.
  • Provide support and guidance to Business Area managers and employees on HSE-related issues.
  • Conduct assessments of occupational health and safety risks, including Job Safety Analysis and Environmental Hazard evaluations.
  • Identify training needs and develop, coordinate, and implement safety training programs as necessary.
  • Perform HSE audits and inspections at various operational sites.
  • Lead audit processes and ensure follow-up on the implementation of recommendations.
  • Create a safety communication strategy and establish regular communication channels and coordination meetings.
  • Implement the HSE reporting framework, including ad hoc reporting for incidents.
  • Disseminate safety notifications and lessons learned across all divisions.
  • Collaborate with the Group HSE Officer and HSE Managers across different Business Areas, as well as the Regional Safety Coordinator.
  • Assist management and employees with safety concerns, particularly in relation to workplace planning, new processes, equipment procurement, and training on personal protective equipment.
  • Support management in addressing and rectifying safety deficiencies.
  • Coordinate safety discussions with designated personnel, works councils, and regulatory authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE regulations and Group policies within the legal entity.
  • Develop and implement localized procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Execute the safety program tailored for the legal entity.
  • Monitor HSE performance, driving improvements and safety initiatives.
  • Facilitate global safety training within the legal entity.
  • Compile comprehensive reports on accidents, incidents, and performance indicators, ensuring timely Group reporting of HSE data.
  • Maintain a systematic approach to workplace risk assessments.
  • Analyze work-related incidents, accidents, and significant near misses.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates should possess 7-10+ years of experience in EHS within a manufacturing context, ideally in the paper sector. A strong understanding of EHS regulations and program requirements is essential. Relevant certifications such as CSP, CPEA, CIH, or CHMM are highly desirable.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required, with the ability to produce clear and precise reports and presentations. Participation in professional development activities may be necessary to maintain expertise in safety and environmental compliance.

This role requires frequent travel within North America and the physical capability to navigate stairs, ladders, and lift items weighing up to 35 pounds.
