Psychiatric Technician

Job Summary:
The City and County of San Francisco is seeking a skilled Psychiatric Technician to join our team. As a Psychiatric Technician, you will work closely with an interdisciplinary team to provide high-quality care and support to patients with severe and persistent mental illnesses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide basic level of general and psychiatric nursing care to mentally ill patients
- Work with an interdisciplinary treatment team to provide an overall treatment program for patients
- Administer medications and treatments, including oral medications, injections, and enemas, under supervision
- Take and chart vital signs, observe patients' condition and behavior, and report significant changes to supervisor or physician
- Prepare patients and care for them during treatment, and provide first aid as needed
- Help create a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, recognizing early symptoms/signs of escalation and at-risk behavior
- Implement therapeutic activities and document patient participation
- Assist rehabilitation therapists in occupational and recreational therapies for patients
- Motivate patients to develop independence in performing activities of daily living
- Assist patients with feeding, clothing, toileting, and activities of daily living, ensuring patients follow safe practices that protect patients and others from personal injury
- Receive visitors and encourage their interest in patients' wellbeing and treatment plan
- Escort patients on the facility premises and to and from the community
- Order supplies as needed, keep records, and participate in orientation and in-service training programs
- Participate in the discharge process
Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Psychiatric Technicians license issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with diverse populations and maintain confidentiality
Working Conditions:
Positions may require considerable physical effort in controlling or restraining violent clients, with continuous exposure to conditions that may result in accidents or injuries or other uncomfortable situations.
