Clinical Research Phlebotomist

Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States University of Michigan Full time

Position Overview

The University of Michigan is seeking 1-2 reliable and highly organized temporary Research Assistants with extensive phlebotomy expertise to contribute to our NIH/CDC-funded respiratory virus research initiatives. The selected Research Assistant II will serve as the primary phlebotomist for our longitudinal cohort study, working under the guidance of the Center Manager and project managers.

The temporary Research Assistants will operate within the School of Public Health's blood draw laboratory. Responsibilities include performing blood draws on both children and adults participating in the study. Candidates must ensure that all samples are accurately labeled and promptly transported to the on-site laboratory.

This temporary role is particularly active during the influenza season, with a focus on the months of September through August, although there may be periods with fewer blood draws.

Participants in this longitudinal study are invited for blood draws multiple times each year. We are looking for an individual who is personable and possesses significant phlebotomy experience to facilitate ongoing collections. You will likely be the sole phlebotomist during your shifts. Blood draw schedules are seasonal, with peak activity from September to December and May to August, while the period from January to May tends to be quieter. During slower operational times, the schedule may be adjusted, or there may be opportunities to assist with other research-related tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens from enrolled study participants through venipuncture.
  • Manage all specimens in accordance with research protocols, preparing them for transport and ensuring timely delivery to the on-site laboratory.
  • Monitor and replenish supply inventory as necessary.
  • Exhibit professional and respectful behavior consistently; provide exceptional customer service, as participant retention is crucial.
  • Accurately and promptly collect and record data, maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of participant information. Adhere strictly to study protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the research team to ensure timely completion of study activities.
  • Coordinate participant communications, ensuring efficient organization and communication.
  • Support and guide participants, addressing any questions or concerns they may have during the study.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with team members.
  • Assist with additional research-related tasks as needed, based on experience and skills.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of consistent phlebotomy experience in a clinical or research environment (at least 20 hours/week); familiarity with drawing blood from children and adults, including those with challenging venous access.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and procedures, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for participants and staff while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. We seek someone who enjoys engaging with people.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills are essential for effective interaction with study participants and the research team.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including data entry, Google Suite applications, email, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong prioritization skills, initiative, and problem-solving abilities.

Work Arrangement

Positions eligible for hybrid or remote work arrangements are determined by the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change at any time and for any reason throughout the course of employment.
