Job Summary

The Executive Director, Global Project & Portfolio Management, will lead a team of experienced project managers and establish, improve, or enhance project & portfolio management processes and initiatives. This role is accountable for managing and overseeing activities associated with leading, planning, executing, and reporting on projects in varying stages of development, from preclinical through lifecycle management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and advance the Global Project Management (GPM) team, focusing on developing, improving, or enhancing PM processes and initiatives.
  • Create consistent best practices across the GPM team, establish measures to ensure individual, project, and GPM success.
  • Enhance engagement with functional areas and executive management, leading to new opportunities for the GPPM team.
  • Drive allocation of GPM resource assignments, assess, and define future PM team growth.
  • Collaborate with the GPPM Portfolio Management & Operations (PMO) team to establish GPPM best practices for project metrics and reporting, regularly assess GPM performance, and recommend modifications as appropriate.
  • Oversee management of GPM initiatives led by GPM team members, ensuring successful completion of activities.
  • Develop and manage the GPM budget.
Global Project Management Responsibilities
  • Define project vision and strategy in concert with the project team leader.
  • Build high-performing teams in alignment with corporate priorities, objectives, and management expectations.
  • Ensure project objectives are met by creating, maintaining, and optimizing Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) that highlight broad cross-functional interdependencies.
  • Develop and manage project reports and timelines to support project goals.
  • Oversee cross-functional efforts and resources, identify, track, and report on critical path activities.
  • Lead matrix teams through identification of potential strategic or operational risks and issues, engage team members to devise mitigation plans or determine solutions.
  • Drive collaborative and productive cross-functional team meetings to discuss strategic or operational plans to meet project deliverables.
  • Communicate effectively and timely with team members and senior management regarding project status, timelines, milestones, key events, and changes to the Development Plan.
  • Communicate effectively and seamlessly with external stakeholders and corporate partners.
  • Develop project budget assumptions and resourcing needs, monitor, and report on deviations to assumptions to senior management.
  • Liaise with peer project managers to maintain consistent cross-project standards and determine overlap of competing priorities.
  • Collaborate with Business Development, Alliance Management, and Finance on partner-related activities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 18 years of drug development experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, including a minimum of 12 years of global project management or equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading or developing a project management team within the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong understanding of the drug development process, including strategic and operational aspects from preclinical through lifecycle management.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality systems.
  • Experience leading teams through NDA (or equivalent) submissions.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to initiate, plan, and execute multiple projects and sub-projects with ease.
  • Proven ability to orchestrate activities across multiple disciplines represented on project teams.
  • Proven ability to manage in a matrix environment and to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to think strategically but work tactically throughout the project management lifecycle.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, and SharePoint. Experience in other project management tools or software applications a plus.
  • Proven ability to be productive and successful in an intense work environment.
