Position Responsibilities

The Water Systems Operations Specialist will work under the guidance of the System Manager and the Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC), adhering to the Fayette County Water and Sewer operational protocols as per their certification level. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and maintaining the water distribution and collection systems, including servicing pumps, motors, valves, generators, and pipeline apparatus.
  • Executing scheduled operations of system blow-off valves, air-vacuum valves, and in-line valves.
  • Overseeing the upkeep of pump/lift stations and maintenance facilities, which includes landscaping, snow removal, cleaning, and painting.
  • Familiarizing oneself with safety protocols and applying them in daily tasks.
  • Locating Fayette County Water equipment and pipelines for contractors and landowners as required.
  • Maintaining activity logs and managing spare parts inventory, including ordering and tracking usage.
  • Reading flow meters, adjusting pressure-reducing valves, and repairing flow meters as necessary.
  • Setting meters and conducting service inspections.
  • Performing hydrant maintenance and exercising valves, including GPS mapping of all system components.
  • Acquiring knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies governing Fayette County Water and Sewer.
  • Collecting water and wastewater samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Monitoring chemical levels and replenishing or replacing containers as needed.
  • Checking water levels and pump operations regularly.
  • Maintaining accurate plant records.
  • Ensuring cleanliness of all facilities and work areas.
  • Assisting with machinery and equipment maintenance.
  • Preparing daily operational reports.
  • Handling hazardous chemicals and performing daily chemical analyses.
  • Completing tasks in line with standard operating procedures or as directed by supervisors.
  • Cross-training and providing support to other departments when necessary.
  • Participating in on-call duties related to the drinking water plant and distribution systems.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Preferred completion of trade-specific courses.
  • Possession of a Class I Distribution Professional Operators Certificate from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, or the ability to obtain it within two years of employment.
  • Valid State of Ohio driver's license with insurability.
  • Class A CDL.
  • Ability to consistently lift 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Capability to work independently and make informed decisions based on collected data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class II water distribution operators license from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Class I collections license from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Class I Waste Water Professional Operators Certificate.
  • Knowledge of equipment, operations, practices, and safety measures related to potable water treatment and pumping.
  • Familiarity with servicing and maintaining water treatment plant equipment.
