Job Description

The Associate General Counsel is a critical role within the Office of General Counsel at Arizona State University. This position is responsible for providing high-level legal advice and representation to the university on a wide range of matters, including complex business transactions, real property law, and state and federal laws.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in general business transactional matters, particularly real estate law, and have the ability to manage a variety of legal matters. This position will primarily support ASU's business activities, including those involving matters related to real estate and public-private partnerships.

The successful applicant will also:

  • Assist with the development of educational training programs for administrators, faculty, and staff;
  • Interact regularly with senior level administration and with state, local, and federal regulatory offices;
  • Manage a significant and varied workload, including working on multiple unrelated matters concurrently and completing complex projects both independently and with direction;
  • Utilize excellent judgment and discretion, as well as exceptional integrity and research and communication skills.

Responsibilities

The Associate General Counsel will be responsible for:

  • Providing legal advice relating to complex business transactions, real property law, state and federal laws, and ABOR and ASU policies;
  • Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts and agreements for a Tier 1 public research university with emphasis on all types of complex real estate contracts;
  • Handling or assisting with land use and planning issues, utility matters, water, environmental, and natural resource matters;
  • Handling or assisting in the handling of ASU transactions, litigation, and administrative proceedings relating to the attorney's primary practice area(s).
Requirements

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • At least six (6) years of experience as a practicing attorney, including experience in the primary practice area(s) designated by the Senior Vice President and General Counsel;
  • Membership in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona within twelve (12) months of hire or qualification as in-house counsel in Arizona.
