Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Surgical Coordinator to join our team at Weill Cornell Medical College. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and scheduling surgeries, as well as ensuring the efficient and effective utilization of the daily surgery schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor surgical schedules and physician availability to manage release time accordingly and in advance.
  • Provide front desk and check-out coverage as needed.
  • Function as liaison between surgeon, operating room (OR) scheduling team, and surgical patients.
  • Conduct all surgical pre-determination, authorization, pre-certification and related appeals.
  • Communicate detailed information and answer patients' questions regarding surgery preparation instructions and arrival/departure instructions relative to procedure.
  • Prepare the patient's medical chart with all necessary surgical paperwork.
  • Coordinate and schedule surgeries, post-operative appointments and other related tests as ordered by the provider.
  • Ensure surgeons are well informed on the status of their cases.
  • Provide feedback to management on process improvements or opportunities for utilization enhancement and patient flow efficiency.
  • Train support staff for back-up responsibilities.
  • Assist physicians with administrative tasks related to patient communication and care.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma
  • Approximately 2 or more years of experience in a patient-facing clinical setting
  • Previous experience using computerized appointment scheduling systems (EPIC preferred) and/or electronic Medical Record (eMR) system (ideally EPIC-Care)
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-9, and ICD-10 coding
  • Working knowledge of third party payor reimbursement - Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care and commercial insurance
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
