SUMMARY

The Lead Custodial Technician oversees designated staff to deliver proficient custodial and minor maintenance services for Bates Technical College. This role involves participating in selection committees to interview and recommend candidates for custodial positions. The Lead Custodial Technician is responsible for training staff and providing constructive feedback for performance evaluations. Any misconduct or performance issues are reported to the Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations. Daily tasks may be executed independently or collaboratively to ensure the cleanliness of the assigned facilities. Depending on the college's requirements and available resources, the Lead Custodial Technician may be assigned a custodial zone and perform duties typically associated with a lower-level custodian. More complex tasks may be conducted under the guidance of a Maintenance Foreman Engineer IV or the Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & OTHER DUTIES

Essential Functions
The Lead Custodial Technician performs the following essential functions as assigned and directed by the Supervisor or designee:
  • Responds to and documents actions taken on work requests.
  • Supervises lower-level custodians and directs daily work responsibilities for assigned staff.
  • Instructs and trains personnel in routine custodial tasks to ensure a clean, safe environment.
  • Coordinates and schedules daily duties of assigned personnel.
  • Teaches employees proper cleaning techniques and safety practices; ensures compliance with relevant policies.
  • Participates in the interview process for potential employees and makes recommendations to supervisors.
  • Identifies and resolves custodial maintenance issues.
  • Ensures adequate custodial supplies are maintained at all times.
  • Inspects assigned areas to confirm cleanliness standards are upheld.
  • When assigned a custodial zone, performs various tasks including maintenance of janitorial tools and equipment, minor painting, and general upkeep of facilities.

The following functions, while not essential, are important and may be considered during evaluations:
  • Represents the Facilities & Operations department positively.
  • Maintains respectful conduct towards students, staff, and the public.
  • Stays informed about Facilities and Operations policies and procedures.
  • Prioritizes safety by reporting hazards promptly.
  • Engages in personal development through available training opportunities.
  • Participates in college committees as needed.

Conditions of Employment
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the local union.
  • Uniform and protective clothing are required.
  • Alternate shifts, weekends, and overtime may be necessary.
  • Must obtain a Class III Boiler License within 30 days of employment.
  • Background checks will be conducted upon offer of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School/GED.
  • Four years of successful experience in custodial functions.
  • Two years of experience in a lead role.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates or higher degree.
  • Three to four years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
