Position Overview:

The Gignoux-Wolfsohn laboratory at UMass Lowell is in search of a dedicated Research Scientist to join our innovative team focused on the intersection of climate change and marine invertebrate health.

This role involves engaging in various research initiatives utilizing metagenomic techniques to investigate the microbiome's influence on the resilience of stony coral tissue loss disease. The successful candidate will spearhead the analysis of shotgun metagenomics and metabarcoding datasets gathered from a range of Caribbean coral species over time. Furthermore, the individual will mentor junior team members and actively participate in collaborative efforts both within the institution and with external partners. Opportunities to present findings at international conferences and publish research in peer-reviewed journals are integral to this position. Participation in fieldwork may be available, though it is not a requirement.

Location Insights:

The Gignoux-Wolfsohn lab, established recently within the Department of Biological Sciences at UMass Lowell, comprises a diverse group of technicians, graduate students, and undergraduates. Our research primarily concentrates on marine invertebrate adaptation in response to climate change and disease. We employ a blend of traditional marine ecology and advanced molecular methodologies. The Department of Biological Sciences is among the largest academic units on campus, featuring a wide array of research interests and a growing graduate student body. UMass Lowell is situated within a vibrant community known for its diverse population and proximity to a significant life sciences hub in the Northeast, which hosts numerous life science enterprises. Research Projects:

1. Monitoring Coral Microbiomes: In collaboration with various institutions, we continuously track and sample corals across multiple Caribbean locations, assessing the impact of stony coral tissue loss disease. By analyzing health status changes alongside microbiome shifts, we aim to uncover relationships between microbial communities and disease resistance.

2. Probiotic Applications in Coral Restoration: Our lab is investigating the potential of probiotics as a sustainable alternative to antibiotics in combating SCTLD. Collaborating with non-profit organizations and governmental bodies, we aim to identify bacterial markers associated with disease resistance in coral species, ultimately contributing to the development of effective probiotic treatments for coral restoration efforts.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in biology or a related discipline
  • A robust background in metagenomics, bioinformatics, or data science
  • Proficiency in relevant analytical tools such as command line, R, or Python
  • A collaborative spirit, creativity, and enthusiasm for research
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • A capacity to engage with diverse groups with empathy and respect
