Position Overview:

The Gignoux-Wolfsohn laboratory at UMass Lowell is in search of a dedicated Research Scientist to become a vital member of our innovative team focused on the intersection of climate change and marine invertebrate health.

This role will involve leading several research initiatives utilizing metagenomic techniques to investigate the microbiome's influence on coral resilience against stony coral tissue loss disease. The successful candidate will spearhead the analysis of complex metagenomic and metabarcoding datasets derived from various Caribbean coral species collected over time. Additionally, mentoring junior researchers and fostering collaborations both within and outside the academic sphere will be key responsibilities. Opportunities to present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals will be integral to this position. Participation in global field studies may be available but is not mandatory.

Work Environment:

The Gignoux-Wolfsohn lab, established recently within the Department of Biological Sciences at UMass Lowell, comprises a diverse team of technicians, graduate students, and undergraduates. Our research primarily aims to elucidate how marine invertebrates adapt to climate change and disease threats. We employ a blend of traditional marine ecological methods alongside advanced molecular techniques. The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the largest on campus, offering a wide array of research interests and a burgeoning graduate student community. UMass Lowell is situated within a vibrant life sciences cluster in Massachusetts, providing numerous opportunities for scientific collaboration and engagement.

Research Projects:

1. Monitoring Coral Microbiomes: In partnership with various institutions, we continuously observe and sample corals across multiple Caribbean sites, some impacted by stony coral tissue loss disease while others remain unaffected. This longitudinal study aims to correlate health status changes with microbiome variations, exploring the relationship between microbial communities and disease resistance.

2. Coral Restoration Initiatives: We are investigating the use of probiotics as a sustainable alternative to antibiotics in combating SCTLD. Collaborating with non-profit organizations and governmental bodies, our lab is identifying bacterial markers associated with disease resistance in coral species. The findings will contribute to developing probiotic treatments for both disease management and restoration efforts.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in biology or a related discipline
  • A robust background in metagenomics, bioinformatics, or data science
  • Proficiency in relevant analytical tools such as command line, R, or Python
  • A collaborative spirit, creativity, and enthusiasm for research
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • The ability to engage with diverse groups respectfully and empathetically
