Position Overview
The role of the Postdoctoral Research Associate presents a remarkable opportunity to engage in pioneering research within the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. This position will focus on several key research initiatives:
  1. Investigation of Open Quantum Systems: The objective is to delve into the boundaries of nuclear stability, examine the characteristics of weakly bound nuclei, and comprehend the nuclear reactions that lead to the formation of the rarest isotopes.
  2. Discovery of New Isotopes: Engage in the search for novel isotopes, contributing to the advancement of nuclear science.
  3. Fragment Separation and Production Mechanisms: Study the processes involved in the separation of fragments and the production of rare isotopes.
  4. Research on Neutron-Rich Nuclei: Explore phenomena related to neutron-rich nuclei at and beyond the dripline, focusing on nuclear structure studies of neutron-unbound resonances and neutron-halo nuclei characterization through Coulomb breakup reactions.
  5. Development of Next-Generation Neutron Detectors: Engage in research aimed at creating advanced neutron detectors through invariant mass and missing mass spectroscopy of neutron-unbound states.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development activities to bolster the experimental program.
  • Perform detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results effectively.
  • Compile findings and prepare comprehensive technical reports and documentation.
  • Collaborate with fellow researchers on complex studies.
  • Prepare and submit research findings for publication in reputable journals.
  • Participate in conferences and seminars to present research outcomes.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned that align with the job classification.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of nuclear science.
  • Ability to conduct independent and innovative research in nuclear science, utilizing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in designing and executing experiments, analyzing experimental data, interpreting results, and drawing conclusions.
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of students and scientists.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey information clearly to various audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in nuclear physics, nuclear or radiochemistry, nuclear astrophysics, or a related field.
  • Publication record in nuclear science in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings.
  • Experience presenting published work at conferences, workshops, and other professional meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in programming with C++.
  • Experience with ROOT and Geant4 software.
  • Knowledge of nuclear electronics and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience in detector design and assembly.
