Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Laboratory Technician Assistant to join our team at Steward Health Care. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the section, training and developing new staff members, and ensuring the highest level of patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Train and develop new laboratory technicians and students, maintaining current competency checklists.
  • Coordinate and monitor activities of laboratory technicians on assigned shifts.
  • Distribute work assignments and act as a liaison between the laboratory and other departments.
  • Direct specimens to the appropriate departments and proficiently handle and use all procedures and reports associated with the use of laboratory information systems.
  • Review specimen status reports at least hourly to ensure all tests have been obtained and notate any time constraints in the laboratory information system.
  • Perform all duties of a laboratory technician and other clinical laboratory assistant duties as required at the direction of the laboratory support supervisor.
  • Successfully perform venipunctures on inpatient and outpatient populations using established procedural policies.
  • Follow standard precautions and wear personal protective equipment to perform tasks as indicated in the safety manual.
  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Demonstrate use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • Receive specimens from couriers and check manifests to verify accurate counts.
  • Sort specimen collection labels, adding, canceling, and combining tests to decrease repeat venipunctures.
  • Answer telephones and communicate pertinent information effectively.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting of pneumatic tube systems and place work orders when necessary.
  • Process specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  • Prepare specimens to be sent to referral laboratories, obtaining proper detailed information pertaining to sample requirements.
  • Perform assigned duties to ensure an adequate inventory of supplies for assigned areas, monitoring inventory levels and storing equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including infection control and hazardous material policies, and notify the laboratory section head of unsafe conditions.
  • Successfully participate in annual health and safety training and compliance activities.
  • Comply with all laboratory quality, health, and safety policies, regulations, and requirements, and with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program preferred
  • Phlebotomy Certification Preferred, ASCP certification/eligible within a year
  • Meditech 6.0 software/hardware experience
