Position Summary: The individual in this role is accountable for the thorough cleaning, sanitization, and sterilization of laboratory instruments, media, and workspaces within the Clinical Laboratory. This position also involves managing laboratory inventory and executing various specimen plating and staining tasks under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager. Active participation in quality improvement initiatives is expected.
Key Responsibilities:
- Efficiently performs blood draws while minimizing discomfort for patients.
- Accurately logs phlebotomy requests in the designated logbook.
- Ensures patient identification by verifying information on requisitions against patient ID bands prior to procedures.
- Maintains a professional demeanor when interacting with patients, colleagues, and medical staff.
- Conducts all patient care activities in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
- Supports a culture of safety and quality within the laboratory environment.
- Labels and documents all test tubes, maintains procedural logs, and organizes paperwork.
- Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate tube colors and blood volume requirements for various tests.
- Adheres to Standard Precautions consistently.
- Safely disposes of sharps in designated containers.
- Prepares and maintains venipuncture trays and work areas, ordering supplies as necessary.
- Operates with minimal supervision and efficiently completes tasks, prioritizing urgent requests appropriately.
- Seeks assistance and direction when needed.
- Exemplifies teamwork and collaboration consistently.
- Assists laboratory technicians and performs clerical duties as required.
- Follows established policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and healthcare facility.
- Conducts routine and urgent laboratory tests.
- Performs qualitative urine assessments, including color, clarity, and specific gravity.
- Recognizes and communicates abnormal lab results to Medical Technologists or Pathologists.
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment safely and correctly, including routine calibration.
- Ensures quality control by running standards and controls, performing routine maintenance, and monitoring quality protocols.
- Identifies and quantifies drugs of abuse and therapeutic substances using toxicology instruments and manual methods.
- Provides essential test results for patient diagnosis and treatment through chemistry equipment operation.
- Handles hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation equipment, performing manual differential methods.
- Utilizes various laboratory instruments for serological testing and other analyses.
- Conducts technical procedures for identifying bacteria, parasites, fungi, and mycobacteria.
- Employs approved disinfectants for cleaning tasks.
- Ensures proper drying of glassware and sterilizes materials using autoclaves.
- Prepares chemical solutions and culture media according to established protocols.
- Manages the plating of all cultures, including fungi and routine specimens.
- Responsible for performing routine stains on submitted samples.
- Oversees inventory management in the laboratory supply room and communicates supply needs to the Medical Technologist.
- Proactively fulfills responsibilities without prompting.
- Consistently demonstrates teamwork values.
- Submits suggestions for enhancing laboratory efficiency.
- Interacts professionally with other Clinical Laboratory personnel.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certification as a medical technician is preferred.
Language Proficiency:
- Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Additional language skills are a plus.
Technical Skills:
- Basic computer skills are necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Work in a typical hospital environment with exposure to biological hazards.
- Close visual work and effective hearing for communication with patients.
- Frequent standing and walking, with the ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Occasional pushing or pulling of weights up to 40 pounds.
