Tax Audit Assistant Section Chief

Join the State of Vermont's Department of Taxes as a Tax Audit Assistant Section Chief and play a crucial role in ensuring the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. As a member of the Compliance Division, you will be responsible for overseeing the quality of audit work, developing procedures to improve service to taxpayers, and maintaining efficient and effective audit outcomes.
About the RoleThis position requires a talented individual with a strong background in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be inquisitive, collaborative, and digitally proficient, with a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the quality of audit work and develop procedures to improve service to taxpayers.
- Consult with department staff on the development of Department programs and procedures.
- Assist the Tax Audit Section Chief, Compliance Audit Manager, and audit staff with handling difficult cases and situations.
- Provide guidance on complex tax cases, researching difficult questions, and providing concise answers.
- Supervise audit staff administering audit programs, develop and monitor workload, performance, and accomplishments of staff, and design and implement internal control procedures.
- Act as the Audit Section Chief in their absence.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, public or business administration, or a related field.
- Three years or more of experience at a professional level in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
