Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Dialysis Nurse Specialist to join our team at Rhode Island Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the total nursing care for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients on chronic dialysis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care for those utilizing Outpatient Dialysis services.
  • Assess and identify each patient's needs for each dialysis session utilizing advanced assessment skills.
  • Develop individualized plans of care for specific dialysis sessions, establishing interventions and patient outcomes in collaboration with physicians, other health team members, patients, and their significant others.
  • Implement plans of care, including initiating and discontinuing dialysis according to proper procedure, clinical observation, equipment monitoring, administration of medications and blood components as ordered.
  • Document nursing actions and make adjustments based on evaluation.
  • Troubleshoot dialysis equipment when necessary.
  • Provide leadership by delegating, supervising, and participating in safe nursing care activities provided by LPNs - Dialysis and Patient Care Technicians.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of patient care and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assess and provide appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs.
  • Participate in unit-based quality improvement and research activities.
  • Utilize all available resources to provide quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Meet and maintain clinical competencies measured by pre-determined credentialing standards, mandatory/safety education, and completion of Basic Life Support and ACLS/PALS as appropriate.
  • Identify growth needs and participate in educational opportunities and professional organizations.
  • Serve as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibility for the patient care unit as delegated.
Requirements
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
  • Certified Nephrology Nursing Certification preferred.
  • Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Must have a minimum of 12 months of nursing experience and an additional 3 months of specialized dialysis experience providing clinical nursing care to dialysis patients in either a chronic or acute setting.
  • Experience must include dialysis focus of renal and hematological systems, such as managing fluid and electrolyte balances, hemodynamics, anemia management, iron management, bone disease management, and being able to differentiate renal lab values from normal lab values.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
  • Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients.
  • Exposed to patient care environment.
  • Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
