About the Role: The Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) team is on the lookout for a Lead Applied Scientist to enhance our Optimal Sourcing Systems (OSS). This team is responsible for optimizing inventory sourcing and managing inbound logistics from a diverse range of global vendors. Our mission is to streamline inventory acquisition for millions of products while efficiently coordinating the movement of billions of units.

Your Contributions: Your technical solutions will significantly influence Amazon's physical supply chain, driving improvements in long-term profitability for our consumer business. Collaborate with top-tier product managers, scientists, and engineers to address some of the industry's most pressing issues.

Key Responsibilities:

A Day in Your Life: In this role, you will engage with partners and stakeholders across Amazon's retail, seller, and operations sectors. You will gain insights into their challenges and develop solutions that enhance our inventory sourcing processes and vendor experiences. Your work will be highly visible and impactful within Amazon's operational framework.

About Our Team: The SCOT team is responsible for Amazon's global inventory planning systems, determining what, when, where, and how much to purchase to achieve our business objectives and ensure customer satisfaction. We manage inventory placement and movement across Amazon's fulfillment network for a vast array of products worth billions globally.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
  • 7+ years of extensive research experience post-PhD.
  • Proficient in production coding with object-oriented programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++.
  • Strong background in algorithm development.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced machine learning and optimization technologies.
  • 7+ years of practical experience in developing machine learning or optimization models in a business context.
  • Proven experience in mentoring and managing senior scientists and engineers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Awareness of current trends in machine learning.
  • Expertise in Machine Learning or Reinforcement Learning; familiarity with Operations Research is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated history of innovation in algorithm development and advancing industry standards.
